BREVET - COSTA - SIERRA - ORIENTE

The Binational Brief
The Binational Brief
The Binational Brief

The fundamental characteristics of brevets are that they are ultra-long-distance, self-sufficient events with open traffic. Therefore:

1. The cyclist is aware of and assumes all the risks involved in cycling on roads with open traffic; and releases the organizer from all liability.

2. The cyclist must have experience to tackle these ultra-long distance and self-supplied events.

3. Cyclists must be self-sufficient in terms of food, water, basic bicycle maintenance, and protection from the elements (rain, cold, heat, sun). They must also be aware of the dangers of overexposure to these elements.

4. Cyclists must be able to withdraw from the event on their own in case of mechanical failure, health problems, injuries, fatigue, or other issues. This means they must have money and a cell phone to call for help from family, friends, or transportation services.

5. Cyclists must have and know how to use GPS devices, as the route is not marked and therefore navigation and recording are essential. Following the route is mandatory, and any omission will result in disqualification. If a cyclist leaves the route for any reason, they must return to it via the same point from which they left.

6. Cyclists can make use of services that are open to the public, such as shops, restaurants, hotels, mechanics, etc.

7. The cyclist was not allowed to receive private support or vehicle escort. This is grounds for disqualification.

8. The cyclist may ride in a group of cyclists, but may not carry domestiques, much less make use of a motorized vehicle.

9. The cyclist must respect traffic rules, ride on the right.

10. It is MANDATORY to carry a long-lasting red rear light. A high-quality, long-lasting front light is also required to ensure visibility and allow cycling at night. In addition, reflective vests, high-visibility clothing, and exercising extreme caution are recommended.
